The great thing about a photograph is, that they have the ability to capture a moment that tells a story. Not just any story, but the most important story of all....Yours.

Recently I had the pleasure of photographing Matt as he prepares for his upcoming bodybuilding competition. The shoot focused on capturing his physique, training journey and dedication to bodybuilding through professional fitness and physique photography.

A body building photoshoot is about more than documenting muscle and strength. It is about capturing the commitment, discipline and personal story behind the physique. For Matt, this session was a chance to celebrate the work he has put in and create images that reflect both his power and personality.

Matt’s Journey Towards the Men’s Physique Masters

Matt is currently focused on one of the biggest challenges in his bodybuilding journey so far, as he prepares for his upcoming competition at Milton Keynes Theatre on 1st November. Having successfully secured a place in the Men’s Physique Masters category, Matt is now deep into his preparation for the competition. Earning a place on that stage is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the commitment, discipline and experience he has built throughout his bodybuilding journey. It is also clear that, despite his years of experience, Matt still has plenty to offer the world of bodybuilding. During our conversation, Matt spoke about what originally inspired him to get into bodybuilding and some of the people who influenced him along the way. Like many of us who grew up during the 1980s, Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of those familiar faces who made an enormous impact. His combination of bodybuilding success and Hollywood stardom helped introduce an entire generation to the world of fitness and physique development.

One of the things that stood out to me most when speaking with Matt, however, wasn't simply his physique or his experience in bodybuilding. It was how calm and composed he was.

When you speak to Matt, you quickly get the impression that he doesn't rush his answers. He takes the time to think about what he wants to say and considers his responses carefully. There is a real sense of patience and thoughtfulness in the way he communicates.

It made me think that perhaps this is also part of what is required when preparing for a bodybuilding competition. The process isn't simply about lifting weights and following a diet. It requires patience, resilience, consistency and the ability to stay focused even when progress may sometimes feel slow.

And then, just when the conversation started to get serious, Matt gave us a little bit of hope! Despite being in competition preparation, he admitted that he still enjoys a cheat meal, and when I asked what his favourite was, the answer was cheesecake.

For those of us in our 40s who still enjoy a good slice of cheesecake, this was perhaps the most reassuring part of the interview! There is hope for us yet.

It was a real pleasure to photograph Matt and spend some time talking to him about his training, his motivation and the journey that has brought him to this point. His upcoming competition at Milton Keynes Theatre will be another important milestone, and I look forward to seeing him step onto the stage and showcase the results of all the hard work he has put in during his preparation.

Creating variety in the images

The best fitness portraits are not all about one pose. We explored movement, strong shapes, close-up details and relaxed moments between shots. Changing the angle, expression and lighting helped create a gallery with depth, from powerful hero portraits to quieter images that showed Matt’s character.

Why a professional photoshoot matters

Professional photography brings together direction, lighting and attention to detail so the final images feel intentional. Whether the photographs are for a personal milestone, a portfolio, social media or motivation for the next stage of training, a considered session can turn hard work into a visual story you will be proud to keep.

The goal was to create images that felt strong, authentic and progress that Matt has made.

If you are considering a fitness, body building or personal branding photoshoot, I would love to hear what you have in mind. Together, we can plan a session that captures your progress and tells your story in a way that feels authentic to you.
